Hey peeps,

If you are like me, you may have tried to look up some of the tools that are commonly used by orthopaedic surgeons and just found a whole bunch of stuff that was/wasn’t very useful. So luckily, while attending a recent AO trauma course we were able to get our hands on some tools and get familiar with the names of some of them.

So thinking of you all, we took some pictures of some of the sets that have some of the tools labeled. Once you start to see more cases and you are in the OR more you will begin to recognize some of the tools and be able to name them. So after checking out your first couple of cases, you can use this post as a reference to put a name to a tool. Use this as a reference to help you remember what names are what. It’ll look good if when given the chance to get your hands dirty, that you are able to call out the names of the instruments that you will need!

Here is a sample ex fix set:

FULL DISCLOSURE: I have NO disclosures (haha) and I am not promoting any specific company. These are just what the AO conference had. Thank you alot to all of the people who made that conference happen!

  • Also, not all ex-fix tools are listed below, just some.

External Fixator:

Clamps:

Wrenches + Steinmann pins + screws

Of note: all of those Schanz screws may be misplaced as you can tell. I hope this post helps some, we will post some more common sets so stay tuned!.
