We know it can be daunting when applying for fellowship and trying to gather more information on different programs. So we created a list of some different fellowship programs from our survey! If you don’t see your program on here and are a fellow/ faculty, you can fill out the short survey to represent your program. Below contains information from current and former fellows on case volume, mentorship and strengths and weaknesses of their programs.

United States Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship Programs:
Program: Andrew’s Sports Medicine Institute
Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Anticipated yearly case volume: 600
Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with: Dr’s. Andrews, Dugas, Cain, Emblom
Rotations/Call Set up: 4 months with Dr. Cain, 4 months with Dr. Dugas, 2 months with Dr. Emblom (hip), 2 months OR float (operate only with everyone, no clinic)

Program: Mississippi Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center
Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Anticipated yearly case volume: 1000. # hip scopes- around 50. # of shoulder arthroplasty cases- around 50
Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with: Buddy Savoie, Larry Field
Rotations/Call Set up: Split between upper and lower extremity. Very balanced
Paid call- Q7d weeknight, 1 weekend every 2 months
Research Requirement: 1 Peer Reviewed Publication or presentation

“Case volume, good numbers of hip scopes/shoulder arthroplasty/elbow scopes, affordable and easy-to-live location. Awesome private practice model that teaches efficiency”

“Great well rounded fellow-centric experience with high case volume, but reasonable workload. Perfect mix of complex and bread-and-butter cases. Jackson is very livable and convenient- allows you to focus on your training without worrying about commutes or cost of living. Would 100% come here again and highly recommend it to future fellows. “
Program: UVA
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Anticipated yearly case volume: 500-600. 50+ hip scopes. 50+ arthroplasty cases
Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with: David diduch, mark miller, Steven Brockmeier, Brian Werner, winston Gwathmey
Rotations/Call Set up: Three 4 month blocks – complex knee/F&A; Patellofemoral/Hip arthroscopy; Complex shoulder/Shoulder arthroplasty

High case complexity; well rounded; shoulder arthroplasty, hip arthroscopy, great sports coverage
Weaknesses of program?:
Hand owns the elbow (there is dedicated time with the Hand team)

Charlottesville is a beautiful setting for a fun year of training.
