We know it can be daunting when applying for fellowship and trying to gather more information on different programs. So we created a list of some different fellowship programs from our survey! If you don’t see your program on here and are a fellow/ faculty, you can fill out the short survey to represent your program. Below contains information from current and former fellows on case volume, mentorship and strengths and weaknesses of their programs.

United States Orthopaedic Pediatric Fellowship Programs:

Program: Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego/UCSD

Location: San Diego, California

Anticipated yearly case volume: 400-500

Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with: Peter Newton, Hank Chambers, Scott Mubarak, Dennis Wenger

Rotations/Call Set up: 2-3 attending services that change every 3 months

4 calls per month, paid, with attending backup

Research Requirement: 1 Peer Reviewed Publication


Strengths of program?: “Operative experience, strong didactics, professional connections”

“Strong operative experience, strong research experience, well regarded internationally”

Weaknesses of program?: “Easy to be over worked”

“Perhaps too a bit too busy.  It was hard to find time to read or enjoy the city”

Other advice: “We have a very strong alumni network which helps to advance in the academic societies.  San Diego is an incredible city to do fellowship in for 1 year.”

Program: Boston Children’s Hospital

Location: Boston, Massacusetts

Anticipated yearly case volume: 200-400

Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with:

Peter Waters, Dan Hedequist, John Emans, Young Jo Kim, Michael Millis, Min Kocher, Jim Kasser, and many more

Rotations/Call Set up: Blocks with flexibility for fellows

1:4 backup. Not paid

Research Requirement: 1 Peer Reviewed Publication


Strengths of program?: “Large number of staff, large volume of complex cases, every likes each other”

Weaknesses of program?: “Sometimes too much flexibility“

Other advice: “Boston Children’s is an amazing place. I would choose it over and over again.”

Program: Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Scottish Rite

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Anticipated yearly case volume: 900-1200

Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with: Mike Busch, Mike Schmitz, Dennis Devito

Rotations/Call Set up: Fellow directed learning program

A night per week, a weekend every month

Research Requirement: Minimal and unsupported


Strengths of program?: “Self directed learning, full attending support, lots of volume”

Weaknesses of program?: “Getting full breadth of clinic care”

Other advice: “Children’s healthcare of Atlanta is a fantastic facility and definitely one every candidate should consider”

Program: Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children

Location: New Castle County, Delaware

Anticipated yearly case volume: 150

Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with: William Mackenzie, Suken Shah, Freeman Miller, Kirk Dabney, Reid Nichols, Richard Kruse

Rotations/Call Set up: first 6 months time divided in 3 groups: Spine/Sports, Deformity/UE/Hip, Cerebral Palsy, the second you can decided based on interest.

Research Requirement: 1 Peer Reviewed Publication and 1 presentation


Strengths of program?: “Breath of pathology, relationship with leaders in the field, opportunities for collaboration and well established recognized name worldwide”

Weaknesses of program?: “hip preservation”

Other advice: “Its a great program and would do it all over again.  More than prepared me for what I do now.”

Program: Vanderbilt

Location: Nashville, Tennesse

Anticipated yearly case volume: None listed (Yet!, Be the first)

Faculty members (“Big names”) you get to work with: Neil Geen, Greg Mencio

Rotations/Call Set up: Quarterly change with faculty

Research Requirement: None


Strengths of program?: “OR experience, resident education, call. The attendings”

Weaknesses of program?: “Lack of gait lab”

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Anticipated yearly case volume: 300
